Creedence Clearwater Revival

They may not have actually been “born on the bayou” but there’s no doubt that Creedence Clearwater Revival were one of the top bands to come out of the 60’s. Hauling from San Francisco and often known simply as “Creedence” or “CCR”, Creedence Clearwater Revival featured singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist John Fogerty, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, drummer Doug Clifford, and bass player Stu Cook. The band formed in 1967 and were originally called the The Blue Velvets before changing their name to The Golliwogs and eventually to Creedence. Honing their own unique mix of blues, southern rock, and roots rock they saw early success with their cover of the popular song “Suzie Q”.

From there their fame only grew as they released hits such as “Proud Mary”, “Born on the Bayou”, and the extremely popular “Bad Moon Rising”. Creedence toured constantly and played such notable gigs as the Atlanta Pop Festival and Woodstock. In the early 70’s Creedence released their hit albums “Cosmo’s Factory” and “Pendulum” but tensions within the band led to an unfortunate break up in 1972. The other band members were not happy with John Fogerty establishing himself as the band’s unquestioned front man and these inner problems were not helped by the intense touring and recording schedule that Creedence had been following from the start as well as tensions between the band and their recording company, Fantasy Records.

After the band disbanded each member went his own way to work on other projects. John Fogerty pursued a very successful career as a solo artist and still tours to this day. Tom Fogerty pursued a less successful solo career and passed away in 1990. Stu Cook and Doug Clifford continued to play together in various bands, forming a version of Creedence later on and continuing to tour. Even though Creedence Clearwater Revival were only together for five short years the band’s legacy will live on forever in the seven albums they recorded.
