Ike & Tina Turner are well known to lovers of rock and roll music the world over. Catchy lyrics and high energy performances are legendary from this duo. Songs like “River Deep Mountain High” and “Nutbush City Limits” were always guaranteed to get people onto the dance floors whenever they were played.

Ike (Isaiah) Turner, who died in December 2007, was almost ten years older than Tina. His first exposure to music was at age five when he started playing the piano. His musical talent was obvious to many people. When only eleven years old he played backing piano for two blues legends of the time. At fourteen he was a DJ for a Mississippi radio station, playing and listening to the hit artists of the day. He also found time to learn the guitar.

Ike and his band named “The Kings Of Rhythm” were looking for a replacement singer when he came across Jackie Brenston. Ike was only twenty years old when he and Jackie recorded a number one chart hit called Rocket “88”. Some say this was the very first rock and roll record. This was the first, but not the last, taste of success for Ike Turner.

Anna Mae Bullock was still in school when she joined the Rhythm Kings as a backing singer. It wasn’t long before Ike recognized her amazing talents and she became a featured singer. Anna changed her name to Tina Turner soon after. The group went on to have five top ten R & B chart hits in less than three years. In 1960, with Tina now the star, the group was renamed to become the “Ike and Tina Turner Revue”. The team had many more successful hits until the split between Ike and Tina in 1976. They finally divorced two years later.

Both Ike & Tina Turner established successful solo careers in the music industry keeping their names and hits alive.
